Carlos L. Daugherty, age 89 of Jacksboro passed away Monday, December 15, 2008 at the St. Mary's Medical Center of Campbell County. He was born February 7, 1919 in Jacksboro, TN. He attended Jacksboro schools until the TVA bought his father's farm for Norris Dam. Carlos moved to Whitesburg, KY when his father was in the coal mining business. He attended Whitesburg, KY schools and graduated Whitesburg High School in 1939. Mr. Daugherty was president of the senior class, quarterback of the football team and president of the F.F.A. After graduation he volunteered for the U.S. Marine Corp. He received his basic training at Paris Island, South Carolina and after basic training was sent to Washington, DC where he stood guard duty for President Roosevelt when he was on his yacht and had a great respect for him. President Roosevelt had a great respect and compassion for his troops. He also stood guard at many other federal buildings. He was accepted at the demolition school in Quantico, VA where he graduated at the head of the class. As a reward he had the honor to choose if he wanted east or west coast duty. He decided for the west coast at the naval base in San Diego, CA. The 18th pioneers were being found and he was the second man to arrive. While on the west coast he traveled aboard ship to Portugal and Spain to pick up Jewish refugees which was brought to the United States and South America.
He served in World War II with the Second Marine Division and the 8th marines in the Pacific Theater. He saw action at Guadalcanal, Tarawa, and Saipan and on the island of Tinian. He was very seriously wounded while he and his men were removing all the explosive bombs and the mine fields. The air strip he cleared on Tinian was the one the Enola Gaye flew from to Japan to drop the atomic bomb. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart, Navy and Marine Corps Medal, Fleet Medal and numerous other medals.
He was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church where he served as Sunday School teacher for youth and adults. He also served in numerous other church offices. He loved to farm, garden and experiment with fruits and vegetables grown in other countries to see if they would grow here. He also loved to raise and show Cornish hens.
Preceded in death by Parents: Abraham and Louella Shoupman Daugherty. Brothers: Theodore, Clarence, Lawrence, Elmer, Albert Lester, Extol and Clifford Daugherty. Sisters: Zora Daugherty Goodman and Carrie Daugherty and a set of twin siblings.
Survived by Wife: Kathleen Vinsant Daugherty, the love of his life for 62 years. Sons and Daughters in Law: Don and Brenda Daugherty of Dunlap, TN. Lawrence Lynn and Kim Daugherty of Jupiter, FL and Keith Vinsant and Pamela Daugherty of Jacksboro. Grandchildren: Chad Lawrence Daugherty, Jessica Diane Daugherty and Crystal Daugherty Hillis. Brothers: Obal Daugherty of Jacksboro and Abraham Daugherty of Rutledge, TN. Several nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral Service will be 2 PM Friday, December 19, 2008 at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with Rev. James Mullins officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Zion Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Thursday night in Martin Wilson Chapel.
