Don Mcghee

May 11, 1935 — March 30, 2009

Donald McGhee, age 73 passed away suddenly March 30th at his home in Jacksboro. He was born May 11th 1935 in Clinchmore, TN and was a member of First Independent Church. He married Arline (Welch) McGhee in 1957. They would have celebrated 52 years in marriage on April 15th.

Don worked in the construction industry for several years. When he retired, he was working for the Campbell County School System. He always managed to find time for the things he felt most passionate about. He loved to garden, fish and camp. He was happiest working outdoors. His favorite hobby was using his metal detector to find the most unusual assortment of items you could imagine. He was a member of SMART, Smokey Mountain Artifact and Recovery Treasures. His hobby took him to many fun destinations and allowed him to make new friends. As much as he loved watching college and professional sports, most would agree that his favorite team would have to be the one any of his three grandchildren might be playing on at the time. He has been a regular at many t-ball, baseball, basketball and soccer games.

Don is preceded in death by his mother and father, Senda (Bullock) McGhee and Carl McGhee, brother, Audy McGhee, and grandson, Steven Thornton. Survivors include wife, Arline (Welch) McGhee. Daughters, Donna (McGhee) Thornton and husband, Larry, Brenda McGhee and Kay (McGhee) Rippy. Granddaughters, Christy Thornton and Meredith Rippy. Sisters, Gladys Queener, Ocie Burch and husband Herbert, and Velsie May. Brothers, Sam McGhee and wife Betty and Harry McGhee and wife Linda.

Don was a devoted husband, loving and supportive father, caring brother and doting grandfather. He will be sadly missed by friends and family.

Funeral Service will be 8 PM Thursday, April 2, 2009 in Martin Wilson Chapel with Rev. Bobby Ray Wilson officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 PM Thursday night before funeral service. Donations can be made to the Steven Thornton Memorial Scholarship fund at any First National Bank Location.
