James O Olvey

J.O. "Joe" Olvey, Sr., 89, passed away at his home Saturday afternoon, May 4, 2013. J.O. was born in Etowah, TN on December 14, 1923, to the late Jimmie Lou and Bert Olvey. At the age of 20, he left his childhood home in Chaska, TN to serve his Country during World War II in the Navy where was assigned to the U.S.S. Richmond officially stationed in Adak, Alaska and was commissioned to the North Pacific near the Ominato Island where he was privileged to witness the "second" surrender of Japan which was one of his proudest memories. A member of over fifty years of the Masonic Lodge No. 623, he also served as a Campbell County Commissioner from 1970 -1974. He retired from Y-12 in 1983 at which time he started his second career as a truck farmer selling his crops at the Oak Ridge Farmers Market until he really started enjoying his retirement, along with wife Helen, as an avid fisherman on Watts Bar Lake.

J. O. is preceded in death by the love of his life, Helen Olvey; Daughter, Janet Lambdin; Sisters, Deloyce (Ed) Harrison; Loretta (Lynn) Yount; Brothers, Jack (Cleo) Olvey, Howard (Myrtle)Olvey, John Olvey, and Leonard Olvey.

He is survived by sons James Olvey, Jr. (Billie Jean), Jacksboro; George Olvey (Rebecca May), Clinton; and Tom Olvey, Jacksboro. Grandchildren, Dustin Olvey, Jacksboro; Zach Olvey, Clinton; Jake Olvey, Walland; and Amber Olvey, Knoxville, TN., along with his nieces and nephews, as well as special sister-in-law, Shirley Yount, and his very best friend, Tole Roberts and wife Linda; and Larry and Janet Steidle.

The family of J. O. Olvey, Sr. will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:45 p.m, Wednesday, May 8, 2013, with Masonic Services at 7:45 and Funeral Services at 8:00 with Rev Lynn Ray officiating. Interment will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 9, 2013 in the Woodlawn Cemetery, LaFollette, TN.
