Joan Annette Goslin, better known as "Joni," was born in LaFollette, Tennessee, on March 27, 1939, to Martha Ella Miller Goslin and Robert Martin Goslin, Sr. Joni had two sisters, Ruth and Sharon, and one brother, Robert, Jr. She grew up in Columbus, Ohio, and attended schools in both Ohio and Tennessee. She was not initially able to finish high school, but went to work early to help support the family. She worked as a customer service representative at a large department store in Columbus, where she won an award for her friendliness. Later in life, she completed a GED and attended Lincoln Memorial University, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in art. Joni was very talented and excelled both as an artist and a singer. She especially loved drawing portraits of people, particularly children. She also drew pictures of animals and of local landmarks, including the LaFollette House. She had a beautiful voice and often sang in churches and in nursing homes. She was unusually friendly and compassionate, and had a large, committed group of friends. Most of all, she loved Jesus, her friends, her family, and life. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in LaFollette for decades. Joni died on September 24, 2011, at Claiborne County Hospital, of multiorgan failure. She is survived by her sisters, several nieces and nephews, and numerous cousins. She will be greatly missed by her friends, family, and all those who were privileged to know her.
There will be a memorial service on Thursday, September 29, 2011 in the Martin Wilson Chapel with Rev Duane Mills officiating.
