Lila May (Jones) Slover

May 5, 1917 — December 28, 2016

Lila May Jones Grand Slover born May 15, 1917, Carroll, Nebraska; died December 28, 2016, Lititz, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Howell Pugh Jones, a Welshman, and Grace Darnell, whose family dated back to the founding days of this country. Like so many other ambitious farm girls, Lila migrated to Washington and in 1941 joined the recently established Office of Price Administration. She married a civil servant, who shortly thereafter went off to war, leaving her with an infant son. In the post-war years, she was a diplomat's wife with two more sons. She resided abroad in Lima, Peru, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Back in Washington, she served as social secretary to the glamorous Marjorie Merriweather Post, owner of General Foods. Subsequent positions included Executive Secretary, Sheet Metal Workers International Association, and Legislative Secretary to US Senator James McClure. Divorce ended her first marriage. She retired with her second husband, Clarence Otis Slover, to a Tennessee homestead, where she continued to live alone after his death in 2005 until 2013. She is survived by Stanley I and Nancy L. Grand, Scranton, PA; Jon Thomas Grand and Noreen Richards, Lake Bluff, IL; and Robert James and Melanie Grand, Springfield, MO; along with four grandchildren and one great grandchild. Surviving siblings include Hayden Clair Jones, Shenandoah IA; William (Bob) Lewis, Neosho, MO; and Rita Goss, Crowley, TX.

Lila loved animals in general and cats in particular. There was always room for one more orphaned kitty. Music and art as well were close to her heart. In her younger days she spent untold hours playing the piano and certain melodies are fused forever with her memory. She was a fine amateur painter and ceramicist whose works are cherished by those who knew her.  She was a remarkable person: strong, willful, adventurous, tenacious. She was always a lady.
