Mavis Gibson

January 20, 1928 — September 28, 2024

Jacksboro

Mavis Ayers Gibson passed away peacefully at her home in Jacksboro, Tennessee, surrounded by her family, on September 28, 2024, at the age of 96. She was born in Maryville, Tennessee on January 20,1928.

Mavis was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Lee; her parents, Albert and Sarah Walden Ayers; and her sisters, Ruth Parker, Mamie Ballantine, and Clara Hipple. She is survived by her six children: Celia (Dean Jolley), Judy Williams, Lorna (Bruce Williams), Gail Palmer, Mike Gibson (Tammy Sharp), and Neil Gibson (Leonora Dula); 29 grandchildren; 76 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren, as well as extended family.

Mavis and Ernest were married on June 30, 1946, and celebrated more than 50 years together before Ernest passed away on February 1, 1998. Mavis was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She faithfully served the Lord, her family, and her friends throughout her life.

A talented musician, Mavis wrote songs, played the guitar, and sang to her family. She shared her musical gifts as a church chorister and choir member. Her writing talent extended beyond music; she contributed newspaper articles on current events, wrote poetry, and compiled a church history for the LaFollette congregation.

Mavis created magical dresses for her daughters and delighted them with homemade paper dolls. Her embroidered pillowcases were cherished by many. Her children dedicated a cookbook to her in gratitude for her many years of food preparation and cooking lessons. Her love for the Savior was reflected in her life.
